Winegrowers/Winers of Evros
Import
The present Evros Winegrowers - Winemakers Database is a work completed within the framework of the project INNOVATION IN LOCAL WINE VARIETIES submitted and implemented by the TRADITION - KNOWLEDGE - DEVELOPMENT operational group, an innovative project that was included in and funded by the RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME OF GREECE (RDP) 2014 - 2020, SUB-MEASURE 16.1 - 16.2 and ACTION 1 "ESTABLISHMENT OF (POTENTIAL) BUSINESS GROUPS OF THE EUROPEAN INNOVATION PARTNERSHIP FOR THE PRODUCTIVITY AND SUSTAINABILITY OF AGRICULTURE".
To collect data from the winegrowers and winemakers of the Evros regional unit, a questionnaire was compiled and personal interviews were conducted with the winegrowers in the summer of 2025.
Viticulture and wine production is a long-standing and important occupation of the inhabitants of Evros, which is being lost over the centuries. The region, known for its wine since the Homeric years, experienced particular glory and glamour in modern times around 1870 when the region was visited by French engineers for the construction of the Adrianople - Dedeagats (Alexandroupolis) railway line.
The winegrowers and winemakers of Evros are presented geographically from Alexandroupoli to Orestiada, following the national road that connects the capital of the Evros Regional Authority with the Bulgarian border at Oremeni.
Local Wine of Evros
The Evros Local Wine was established in July 2010. The Evros PGI zone includes the boundaries of the homonymous regional unit, at the eastern end of Thrace, and also includes the island of Samothrace. The vineyards, which must be located at an altitude of over 20m, are located mainly in the central (Soufli area) and the northern part of the prefecture on the border with Bulgaria (Trigono area). An important role in the zone is played by the homonymous river, which moderates the high temperatures of the summer, as well as the presence of several red indigenous varieties.
